One of the keys to success in Love Live School Idol Festival is having very strong teams. With good teams, you'll be able to get higher scores in live shows. Getting higher scores will allow you to get better rewards.
How many teams should I have?
You are going to want at least three teams. One team to play smile attribute songs with, one to play pure attribute songs with, and one to play cool attribute songs with. More experienced players often have more than three teams for certain reasons, but for a beginner, having just three teams, one for every song attribute, is okay.
How should I form these teams then?
That's a good question, I'll walk you through making a smile attribute team, but there are some things you will want to know first.
Just like the songs, every card has a main attribute. Finding out the main attribute of a card is very easy, just look at the bottom right of the picture of the card and you'll see one of three symbols. These symbols indicate what the main attribute of a card is. These same symbols are shown on the "live show" menu next to the name of each song (more details about that on the live shows page). The symbols for all three attributes are shown below.

The bottom right corner of every card has one of these three symbols, and one of these symbols is also displayed to the left of a song's name on the "live show" menu. Some examples of this are shown below.
As you can see, that SR card of Honoka up there is a pure attribute card and the song Listen to My Heart is a pure attribute song. If you look at the details of that Honoka card, you'll see that the pure attribute score is higher than the smile and cool attribute scores. As you level that card up through practice, you'll see all three of those scores go up, but the pure score will still remain the highest. That Honoka card would fit nicely in a team of other pure attribute cards in order to play Listen to My Heart. Now that you know about attributes and how they work, we can start making a team.
Now let's make a team!
Now I'm going to show you the easiest way to make a good team. In my example, I'm going to make a smile attribute team. To make a team, you're going to want to go hit the "members" tab at the bottom of the main menu, and then hit the "team formation" button on the "members" menu. Once you do so, you'll be taken to a screen similar to this.
You'll probably already have at least one team there if you haven't ever been to this menu, but that team won't be too great. I already have some teams made, but I cleared out a spot so I can make a team from scratch. The first step to making a team easily is to hit the "auto formation" button towards the bottom of the screen.
Tapping the "auto formation" button will make the menu pop up above. There are three drop down menus: attribute, skill, and type. Right now, the only one we're going to concern ourselves with is the attribute drop down menu. Smile is already selected which will work in my example. Ignore everything else and press the "ok" button.
There's a nice smile team right there. The cards that were added into your team are most likely different than mine, but your nine best smile attribute cards have been added into a team. Now, you're going to want to do the same thing with two more team, except for one of them, you'll want to select "pure" in the attribute drop down menu in the auto formation menu, and for the last team, you'll want to select "cool" from the attribute drop down menu in the auto formation menu. Make sure you use the arrow
If you want to rearrange the position of any of the cards in your teams for whatever reason, you can do so with the "change position" button. Then you'll be able to slide around the cards into the position you want. The "new team name" button will let you change the name of the team to anything under 10 characters long. The "set as main" button is a bit more complicated. Remember me mentioning how you should select a guest on the live shows page? Well, the center card of the team that is your main team will be the card that helps other people out when someone selects you as a guest for their live show. That means, you always want your rarest card of that team's attribute as the center of that team. For example, in my smile team, I'll want to use the highest rarity smile card I have as the center card. If any of your teams have a UR as the center card, you'll want to make that team your main team.
Now as you obtain rarer cards, make sure you use practice to level your rarer cards up, and add them to the right team. To replace a card on a team, simply tap the face of the card you want to replace on the team formation page. Once you do that, you'll be shown a list of all the cards you have. Select the new card that you want to replace the old card. It'll then take you back to the team you're editing and the new card you added will be on your team.

Is there a video I can watch about all this?
Of course there is! Below is a video made by the same person who made the video on the introduction page. Let Eryn Cerise guide you on how to make a good team in video form! She also goes in great detail about much more advanced ways to optimize your teams to make the absolute best teams you can possibly make. The team building website she mentions during the video can be found here, though it is kinda hard to use.
